The Louise brooks exhibition
Yesterday Shane and I checked walked over to the International Center of Photography to see photographs of the great 1920's actress Louise Brooks. Shane has been a long time fan of her films and rare elegant beauty, and since I have recently learned more about her I was very intrigued to see this collection of photographs. The International Center of Photography is a pretty neat place filled with many great black and white photos with a great history behind each and every one, but seeing the Louise Brooks photographs was a great treat. The color and warmth some of these photos had is something you can only see when you experience this for yourself.

She was a great actress with a great look, her most beautiful features are her long neck, wide big dark eyes, and elegant figure. She looked great in the flapper fashion of the 1920's and the hair was a glamorous addition to her unique fashion statement. Louise Brooks was a very symbolic icon then and more so now since so many are inspired by her films and beauty. Some of her most popular films include "Pandora's Box" and "Diary of a Lost Girl". These films are a wonder to watch and the exhibition is open till April 29th, a sure must see if you are a fan of this beauty.

Gallery Hopping
Today i visited the BELLWETHER Gallery and saw some strange art, alot of stop motion animation mixed in with traditional animation. This was a cool gallery, Paulina Hollers and Brent Green were being exibited and the displays were great! I really liked this big clock tree in the middle of the gallery, it was cool because inside it was a little figurine watching a screen..=)
Following our visit to the BELLWETHER Gallery, we went over the JONATHAN LEVINE Gallery to check out David Choe's art. He had some great colorful pieces and lots of great paintings. Seeing his work made me want to try and experiment alot more with my painting. His work and style speaks for itself aswell as his unique style for various colors within a piece. If you haven't seen David Choe's work, you can see it here, and if you can make it to his exhibit at the LEVINE Gallery, then check it out, it is a must see!!

Recent junk
Lately I have been experimenting with fabrics, construction paper, and different textures to create some of my few recent illustrations. Here are a few that are finished or almost finished in their before and after stages.

As you can see after the drawing was finished, i found a few fabrics that went with the colors in this piece, using real fabric and buttons to accomplish a real textured outfit. I also used a brown paper bag for the background, i love those simple things you can find laying around the house.
This one uses an old vintage curtain texture as the background, along with a patterned fabric for the dress. The rest is a combination of the actual drawing with illustrator and some imagination. ;)

This last one is me just using my usual techniques and as always i do love florals!

PS1 visit
This past saturday I went to PS1 to check out the some of the strangest but interesting contemporary artists the city has to offer. When arriving at this very distinct odd looking building, i couldn't help but noticing that it very much looked like an old grammar school turned art stand palace.
The outside had rooms made out of pure thick cement walls and no ceelings. While entering PS1 i noticed how great the faded paint and drywall created the mood in this place.
As we entered the exibits, karen and I noticed many strange works of art we thought couldn't get any stranger. I attempted to take photos, but was denied the chance by the working staff.
As karen and i explored the place, we couldn't help but be a bit freaked out by the gated old steps and eerie music in the hallways.
The bathrooms were pretty odd as well as they too had music for your creepiest of nightmares. Wondering through most of this place was a fun unexpected experience of strange and odd admirable works of art, even the exibit of horror and strange bit sounds at the boiler room was the rare treat we all should experience. The favorite but by far the oddest one of all was the James Turrell exibit," The Meeting". This is an exeptional great piece composed of only an open space, all around square seating, and a large square opening in the ceeling of the room.
This opening allows the viewer to appreciate the meeting of space, and entering this room was like walking into another world, it was icy but warm as the walls had a very orange-reddish color. PS1 is a must see for all those looking for a different artsy point of view, and a good memorable date.

My pops
Since the passing of my grandpa this past august, i have felt incomplete, mainly because i have always wanted to make him something special because he was always there for me and now I will never have the chance to. Right after his passing, i tried so hard to find a way to cope with his loss and so i made an illustration for him. This is something i made a few months ago, but i felt it meant alot to me and so i decided to share it with you.

fivefour
Last night I went to see my friend's band and got lost driving through philly. Yea i know, i spent almost 4 years in philly, how could i get lost? Well i did, it was through a creepy part too. I finally found my way and got to see the last 3 songs the FiveFour did and they were pretty rad! After the show i kidnapped them and took them to get a philly cheesesteak. Then we headed over to mom's and had a few drinks, that was fun except for all the smoking everyone else in the bar was doing. When we came out we ended up smelling like french prostitutes, but other than that it was a fun fun night.

Pixie and her monkey
Maybe you all didn't know, but pixie has been asking me for a monkey lately, and since i can't afford one at the moment i drew a picture of her with a monkey and gave it to her as a present.
She didn't seem thrilled and instead layed on top of it and fell asleep. I figured it was her way of telling me she didn't like her present, so i decided to trick her by putting the monkey on one of her favorite pictures and telling her she had her way with Mr. Monkey.
After she saw the picture, she went back to sleep.

Little me and silly feet
Looking through the old photo albums my grandpa kept back in peru, i noticed that little me always had silly legs and feet.
Why do i stand that way? My legs always seem really silly and they look like they form an "A", my feet also seem to turn in like monkey paws! Looking at this deformity of myself as a kid reminded me of what shane also pointed out about my little twirp features, " BIG EYES, BIG EYES like a cartoon", he would always say. This made me want to draw myself and see if i can capture those crazy little feet and eyes.
I don't think i did, but it was fun using little me pictures as inspiration. And just incase you were wondering, no my legs don't make that "A" shape no more, but if they did, i would be rolling in the dough!
